June is designated as African American Music Appreciation Month, established by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. This month celebrates the significant influence of African American music, a crucial part of our country’s cultural heritage. In 2009, President Barack Obama renamed it African American Music Appreciation Month. Sacred Music, Folk Music, Blues, Military Music, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Rock and Roll, Hip-Hop, and Rap are just a few examples of musical styles. Beyond these genres, African American musicians have also made significant contributions to classical music, country and western, pop, and various forms of dance music, including disco, techno, and house, among others. Music infused with elements of African American traditions resonates with and impacts millions of people worldwide.
