A rare earthquake beneath Lake Michigan gave many Chicago-area residents an unexpected jolt Wednesday afternoon, with people across the city and surrounding suburbs reporting that they felt their homes and buildings briefly shake, according to NBC Chicago.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 2.9 magnitude and struck at approximately 2:38 p.m. The epicenter was located about 12 miles east-northeast of Kenilworth, beneath southern Lake Michigan.

Residents from Chicago’s North Side to communities including Evanston, Wilmette, Glencoe, Highland Park, Skokie, Lincolnwood, Libertyville and Waukegan reported feeling the brief tremor. Within hours, dozens of people submitted “Did You Feel It?” reports to the USGS, describing everything from vibrating floors to rattling homes.

While earthquakes are uncommon in Illinois, experts say smaller quakes do occur occasionally throughout the Midwest due to movement along ancient underground fault lines. Even relatively weak earthquakes in the central United States can be felt over a much larger area than earthquakes of similar strength in western states because of the region’s geology.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there were no reports of injuries or structural damage linked to the earthquake. Officials continue to monitor the situation, though quakes of this magnitude rarely cause significant damage.

For many Chicago-area residents, the unusual event sparked confusion, with some initially believing a large truck had passed by or that construction was causing the shaking. Others quickly took to social media to ask if anyone else had felt the sudden rumble.
