CHICAGO TEACHER OPENS SCHOOL BOUTIQUE & FOOD PANTRY FOR STUDENTS

Inside Dunbar Vocational Career Academy on Chicago’s South Side, a heartfelt project rooted in love and resilience is making a major difference in the lives of students. According to NBC Chicago, a newly renovated student boutique known as Chloe’s Closet has officially reopened, offering clothing, hygiene products, and other essential items to students at no cost.

What began as a small collection of donated prom dresses has grown into a full boutique-style space designed to support students who may be struggling to afford everyday necessities. The initiative was founded by special education teacher Tyesa Walton, who created the program in honor of her daughter, Chloe, who passed away shortly after birth. Walton turned her grief into purpose, creating something meaningful that continues to help hundreds of students each year.

Over time, the project gained support from school staff, volunteers, and community partners who helped transform the space into a welcoming boutique environment. Students can now browse racks of clothing, shoes, and accessories in a setting that feels like a retail store rather than a donation center. The goal is to provide support in a way that protects students’ dignity while boosting their confidence.

Along with the boutique reopening, the school also introduced Chloe’s Kitchen, a food pantry created to address food insecurity among students. The pantry provides snacks and meals to those who may not always have reliable access to food at home. For many students, having access to these resources allows them to focus more on learning and less on worrying about basic needs.

The impact of Chloe’s Closet reaches far beyond clothing. It helps students attend special events like prom, stay prepared for school, and feel more confident in their daily lives. Many students have shared that the boutique gives them a sense of belonging and reminds them that their community cares.

For Walton, the mission remains simple—give back and make sure every student feels valued. What started as a small act of kindness has grown into a lasting symbol of compassion, strength, and community support inside one Chicago high school. ❤️
