A routine night at one of Spain’s most famous spring festivals turned into a moment of panic when a high-thrill amusement ride malfunctioned midair, leaving four people injured—including two children—and sparking fresh concerns about fairground safety.
The incident happened during the Feria de Abril in Seville, a vibrant event known for its music, food, and carnival attractions. Among those attractions was a slingshot-style ride called Steel Max, designed to launch riders hundreds of feet into the air using tensioned cables.
As seen in the viral video, one of those cables snapped shortly after launch, sending the capsule into a violent, uncontrolled swing. The ride was seen jerking erratically before striking part of its own structure, as onlookers screamed and operators scrambled to respond.
Despite the terrifying visuals, the outcome was less severe than many feared. According to 9News, it’s confirmed that four people were injured: two children who were riding at the time and two individuals on the ground who were struck by falling debris. All injuries were described as minor, and those affected were treated promptly by emergency services.
Local officials moved quickly to shut down the ride and secure the area. Spain’s national police have since opened an investigation to determine what caused the failure, focusing on whether it stemmed from a mechanical defect, maintenance oversight, or operational error. The ride will remain closed pending the outcome.
