Footage released by the Livonia Police Department on Sunday showed the moment officers detained a man accused of stealing mail after finding him hiding in a dumpster last month.
The individual, 23-year-old Al-Qaadir Walik-Rasool from New Haven, Michigan, faces multiple charges, including fleeing from police, resisting arrest, and five counts of mail theft. Walik-Rasool was formally charged on January 24.
Authorities reported that the alleged theft occurred between January 21 and 22. On January 23, while canvassing a neighborhood for surveillance footage, police spotted a black Chevy Malibu that matched the description provided by witnesses.
When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled but lost control of the vehicle and ran away on foot. According to Livonia police, Walik-Rasool was located shortly thereafter in a nearby dumpster. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 27.
