CLARESSA SHIELDS BECOMES THE FIRST EVER FEMALE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

In a historic moment fitting for Black History Month, Claressa Shields cemented her legacy on February 2, 2025, by defeating Danielle Perkins via unanimous decision. With this victory, Shields became the first boxer—male or female—to hold undisputed titles in three different weight classes during the four-belt era.

The judges scored the fight 100-89, 97-92, and 99-90, all in favor of Shields. Despite sustaining a torn labrum in her left shoulder before the match, she displayed her signature dominance, knocking down the previously undefeated Perkins in the final round. The Flint, Michigan, crowd erupted as their hometown hero delivered another career-defining performance. The sellout crowd at the Dort Financial Center witnessed a performance that will be remembered as a milestone in women’s sports.

At 29, Shields has accomplished nearly everything in her boxing career. The achievement is especially significant during February, a time to honor Black excellence, perseverance, and contributions to history. Her victory adds to the legacy of trailblazing Black athletes who have reshaped sports, inspiring the next generation to break barriers.

As Shields looks ahead to potential bouts against top contenders like Franchon Crews, Savannah Marshall, or even MMA crossovers with Cris Cyborg, her impact on boxing and sports history is undeniable.
