The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has released its annual list of vanity and personalized license plate requests that were rejected in 2025, offering a glimpse into the creative — and sometimes controversial — ideas submitted by drivers.
Out of tens of thousands of applications, more than 500 plate requests were denied for violating state rules that prohibit offensive, profane, or misleading language. The review process is handled by staff who screen combinations for inappropriate meanings, including slang or hidden messages.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said the list shows drivers’ creativity but emphasized that plates must meet standards of good taste. The rejected list is released each year and often draws public attention for its unusual entries.
Illinois residents can continue applying for personalized plates, but officials remind drivers that not every idea will make it onto the road.
